Executive Summary

Permit.io is a developer-focused application authorisation platform, built on top of OPAL. Since authorisation technology is nascent, Permit wants to be a market leader by increasing developers’ engagement with their main GitHub repository. With Quira Quest, Permit reached over one thousand relevant developers and successfully increased awareness about authorisation with OPAL.

🌅 What is OPAL?

OPAL (Open Policy Administration Layer) helps with real-time data and configuration updates to authorisation policies across applications. The core repo can be found here permitio/opal.

📣 Addressing OPAL’s engagement needs

Permit wanted to increase awareness about authorisation for developers and brand-name recognition in the open-source ecosystem.

“For a long time, it has been difficult for us to attract developers into OPAL. Most of the developers are aware about authentication, but not about authorisation. We want to educate the market before it is too late.”

🧗🏽‍♂️ Implementing Quira Creator Quests

Creator quests are coding challenges that intend to reward software developers for their creativity and ideas. Quira prompts our 50k+ strong open-source community with a topic in a personalised challenge. Their goal is to create a new repository that builds against that prompt or topic and submit it to Quira to gather community feedback in the form of up-votes or comments, or sometimes directly via new Issues or comments in the partner’s Discord server. In doing so, they discover an interesting new open source project and sometimes convert to stargazers, users, and even contributors to our partners’ GitHub repository.

To address each client’s needs, Quira aligns the Quest theme in a way that prompts our community to build a project utilising packages of the partner organisation. Quira then market the Quest to developers in our community who we think will be particularly interested in the Quest’s theme.

⭐ The impact of Quira Creator Quests

Around 3,500 developers in Quira’s community were introduced to permitio/opal as a direct result of the Quest. The collaboration yielded 100+ submissions. During the Quest, OPAL was promoted to our community through Discord and Hackathon, with over 100 developers attending the talks .✨

“Quest was the perfect way for us to raise awareness about authorisation. We are still in the early days of authorisation.”

The engagement of permit within our community increased the repository’s awareness across different developer communities, all to the point that the repository collected over 1,100+ stars during the course of the quest.

“It is exciting to see the community engaging and building things with Permit or OPAL. We usually target developers through content, paid advertising, livestream, or conferences. With Quira Quest, we are able to reach out to a new user segment”

🌈 Looking ahead

The collaboration between Permit.io and Quira was a resounding success.

With Quira’s value proposition to bring a relevant community of developers for each client, Quira and Permit.io are already brainstorming on a future collaboration to increase their user base. 🤝

“Working with Quira team for Quest has been a first class experience. I am grateful for their help to keep the community engaged during Quest. I wish I could be more involved with Quira’s developer community in the future.”
